Take it easy
El Enemigo is the personal project of Catena Zapata winemaker Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena, scion of the ‘first family of Argentine wine’. It is a winery that takes a laidback approach to hospitality, where you can while away a lazy afternoon sipping great wines and eating delicious food while overlooking sun-lit vineyards to your heart’s content.

Mi casa, tu casa
The El Enemigo experience is not about production processes or barrel cellars, it is where you come for a sense of home – but with sensational wines and food added on. This is not just where Alejandro makes wine – he also lives here. The affable winemaker will almost invariably be found milling around, dropping in the conversation as if you were a special guest in his home.

In the best possible taste
Once you’ve made the short drive from the centre of Mendoza to the unprepossessing winery, there are two ways of approaching your visit: one is the wine tour, where you can find out about the winery’s impressive architecture and Dante-inspired art collection, guided by knowledgeable staff; the other is the restaurant and wine tasting. The dining experience they have created is a cut above the norm: choose from a three-course lunch or seven-course dinner showcasing simple, seasonal dishes to complement El Enemigo’s supremely gastronomic-friendly range of wines

A sense of history
Adrianna is a prominent historian, and her enthusiasm for her subject informs the winery, where the goal is to capture the sense of the era in which European immigrants who settled in Argentina sought to make wines as fine as those of their homelands. Mission accomplished, it seems: Alejandro holds the highest rating ever for a varietal Cabernet Franc from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate! El Enemigo is the kind of satisfying winery experience that will have you penciling in dates for next year’s visit before you leave.
