Low-intervention, often amphora-aged wines featuring unusual blends
The wine theme at Bodegas RE is constant experimentation. Assisted by his son Pablo and daughter Piedad, founder Pablo Morandé – a viticultural pioneer in Casablanca, planting some of the first vines there back in 1982 – is on a constant quest to ‘REdiscover’ and ‘Reinvent’: think unusual co-ferment blends of old-vine varieties aged in traditional terracotta tinajas, or complex reds aged under flor and kept back for several years before release. For anyone visiting Aconcagua, this convention-defying winery is totally worthy of attention.Like father, like son
Located in the Casablanca Valley, only 30 minutes from Valparaíso/Viña del Mar, and a little more than an hour from Santiago, Bodegas Re is definitively a family business – with a familial sense of intimacy to boot. Don’t be surprised to see Pablo junior, hands stained red, hard at work in the cellar, or Pablo senior arriving on his bike to check on his liqueurs, offering visitors a friendly explanation of what wonderful concoction he’s working on.The personal touch
Bodegas RE provides variety of homely, personalised, enriching tours and tastings, as well as oenotourism activities such as picnics, brunches and food and wine pairings. A typical tour may include a walk through the sunlit vineyards, a recce of the underground cellar, where you will see the family’s stunning collection of traditional tinajas, finishing at the cosy, vintage-style ‘emporio’ – a bar and shop which wouldn’t look out of place in the trendy bobo thoroughfares of Hackney or Brooklyn. Have a glass of wine (or two) at the bar itself or on the terrace, basking in the heavenly sunshine, in summer, or snuggling up to the open fireplace, in winter.
