The river knows
As a wine lover, you haven’t really seen and done it all until you’ve taken a boat cruise down the Mosel, glass of chilled Riesling in hand, marvelling at hauntingly named first growth vineyards like Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Urziger Wurtzgarten and Graacher Himmelreich. And there can be few better wineries to stop off at than the two-centuries-old Weingut Ernie Loosen, located right on the bank of the ancient river next to Bernkastel.
Everybody loves Ernie
Ernie Loosen is one of the most recognisable faces in the world of wine. It’s no exaggeration to say that the popularity and prestige that Mosel Riesling enjoys around the world today is largely down to him. Thanks to his dedication, the Loosen estate has become a member of the prestigious VDP, Germany’s association of top-rated wine estates, and has been named among the best wine estates in Germany by practically every wine publication in existence.
The famous slate slopes
The Dr Loosen estate encompasses some of the most highly prized and visually spectacular vineyards in the Mosel Valley. Perilously steep slopes of red and blue slate and ancient volcanic soils are home to vines that are up to 140 years old and often ungrafted. This really is the ultimate place in which to experience the profundity of the valley’s top Rieslings.
Riesling, Riesling, Riesling
The estate offers wine tastings hosted by friendly, well-trained staff, who will help you to understand the effects of different soil types in the best single-vineyard wines. There is a huge range of Rieslings to choose from, so you can really fill your boots, tasting every style and quality level, from bone-dry Kabinetts to lusciously sweet Ausleses. The Loosen staff are sure to be able to help you to book that bucket-list boat trip too!
