Schloss Gobelsburg
Kamptal, Austria
- #99 World's Best Vineyards 2024
The sixteenth century Gobelsburg castle – a resplendent Renaissance manor house commissioned by the Habsburg royal family (just some of its former owners) – is the focal point of the oldest and most highly regarded wine estate in the Kamptal region of Austria. The Cistercian monks of the nearby Zwettl Abbey first planted vines here in 1171 – the earliest on record – and instigated some of the first organic winemaking practices, a mindset still employed today. After a rejuvenation by the current owners in the 1990s, Gobelsburg once again reigns as one of the finest Riesling producers in the world; its sumptuous and complex wines match the gilded interiors, embellished with artwork right up to the painted ceilings, all of which you can behold on expertly guided tours and tastings.
