Viñedos de Alcohuaz
Elqui Valley, Chile
The mountain winery of Viñedos de Alcohuaz was founded in 2005 high up in the rocky foothills of the Andes, and grapes have been grown on the estate for over 100 years. Its lack of surrounding lights makes this a prime stargazing spot, made even more scenic by the quartz in the soils shimmering in the moonlight. The 18 hectares of vines comprise the highest commercial ones in Chile and visitors get to witness both these and some traditional foot-treading (a method of extracting colour, flavour and tannins from the grapes that avoids the need for pumps or electricity).
