Ktima Gerovassiliou
Epanomi , Greece
A stalwart of today’s Greek winemaking scene, Vangelis Gerovassiliou doesn’t just teach guests about his own methods but illuminates them to wine’s illustrious past. Founded in 1981, his 80-hectare estate in Northern Greece is bordered by the ocean on three sides and looks across the Thermaic Gulf to Mount Olympus, all instilling freshness into the wines and creating a stunning setting for visitors, who’ll encounter his extensive art collection at every turn – throughout the gardens, terraces, vineyards, winery and even the car park (Costas Varotsos’ ‘Moon of Alexandria’ and Renzo Gallo’s ‘Phoinix’ are particularly beguiling). Detailed tours cover the vineyards, winery and the Wine Museum, whose viticultural artefacts include a 2,600-strong collection of corkscrews dating back to the eighteenth century. Follow your schooling with a ‘Topos’ tasting of local delicacies or put yourself in the chef’s hands with gourmet plates paired to a bespoke wine selection.
