Kir-Yianni

Naoussa, Greece

The slopes of Mount Vermio in Macedonia, Northern Greece aren’t just home to two ski resorts providing snow-based thrills in winter, and hiking and biking trails come summer, but to vineyards growing the native Xinomavro (a fruity yet tannic grape often likened to the best Nebbiolos). The Boutaris family has been making wine in the area for over a hundred years, drawing on a Grecian vinous heritage that goes back many thousands more, and Kir-Yianni began in 1997 when fourth generation vintner Yiannis Boutaris struck out on his own. Book an appointment at the Naoussa winery for vineyard wanders and tastings, ideally complemented by sampling the gastronomic delights of this mountain village and visiting sites like the nearby ruins of Mieza, where Aristotle taught a young Alexander the Great.
