Quinta da Taboadella

Dão, Portugal

An estate traceable back to the very first century, with firm records from 1255, Quinta da Taboadella’s recent revamp brings it firmly up to date with a slick eight-bedroomed country farmhouse-style villa for groups or families to stay in while appreciating the hilltop views over gardens, 40 hectares of vineyards and a pine forest. Tours combine ancient with modern, taking in one of the region’s oldest grape presses within a monolithic boulder before moving through to the gravity-flow winery completed in 2020, eyeing up the barrels from two suspended walkways. Tastings take place in the Wine House (the old barn) or within the cellar itself, which leads out onto a wood- and cork-constructed balcony reflecting the focus on local, natural materials – and grape varieties.
