Walker Bay, South Africa
The coastline and mountains of South Africa’s Western Cape provide a stunning setting for the bulk of the country’s winemaking, which dates back to the seventeenth century. And though older wineries are typically recognized for their traditional Cape Dutch homesteads, it is a thoroughly modern estate that tops our list of African vineyards.
Creation was established from scratch in 2002 by JC and Carolyn Martin, who planted vines on virgin soils in the peaceful and prestigious Hemel-en-Aarde sub-region of Walker Bay, noted for cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Not only are their wines now some of South Africa’s finest, the sustainably-focused estate champions solar power and the biodiversity of the Cape’s distinctive fynbos vegetation alongside the joys of art and food. Visits here are friendly, enlightening and bursting with delicious flavours
