Château Margaux

Bordeaux, France

A tree-lined boulevard leads up to Château Margaux’s Neo-Palladian manor house, built by Louis Combes in the early nineteenth century. It is a suitably regal introduction to one of Bordeaux’s original top four (‘First Growth’) wineries, as ranked by officials working for Emperor Napoleon III in 1855. Newer additions completed by British starchitect Norman Foster in 2015 include a winery and tasting rooms in a glass-fronted pavilion, meaning that tours (which must be pre-booked) incorporate all chapters of this estate’s vast history.
