Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo
Douro Valley, Portugal
- #92 World's Best Vineyards 2024
A true taste of the Douro comes from its first winery to have experimented with planting monovarietals across 41 separately identified microterroirs, from 1979 onwards (well before the trend took off). Sample a plethora of wines made with native grape varieties alongside locally inspired and sourced cuisine served with finesse at Terraçu restaurant, within this estate once owned by the Portuguese royal family, with cellars dating back to 1764. Tastings take place at the Patamar Petiscaria store, cleverly built into the hillside, a patio overlooking the old stone terraced vineyards, river and riverside Carmelite chapel. Learn even more at the onsite Wine Museum Centre (containing artifacts chronicling Port production from the nineteenth century) or by checking into one of the traditional manor house’s 11 bedrooms.
