Spier Wine Farm

Stellenbosch, South Africa

One of the first wineries to be founded in South Africa’s vinous heartland of Stellenbosch, in 1692, this heritage estate offers activities for all the family. Nifty excursions take you through the vineyards by Segway or bicycle, and self-guided audio tours teach you the farmstead’s history via the fictional tale of nineteenth century slaves, incorporating the Cape Dutch manor, which features an unparalleled collection of gables (totaling 21) and the country’s oldest wine cellars (dating back to 1773). The hotel on the banks of the Eerste River offers gardens, pools, a spa and restaurant to overnight guests, whilst day visitors can make the most of the farm-to-table cuisine of the café (providing acclaimed picnics) and Vadas Smokehouse restaurant. An ‘Eagle Encounter’ gets children involved in falconry displays while grown-ups may favour the nine-course ‘Taste South African Heritage’ menu pairing the wines with nibbles like biltong, chakalaka and pap, and koeksisters. There’s plenty of artwork, too.
