In the 19th century, Dom Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, an enthusiastic winemaking student, came to Rioja to further his art. Seeing the perfect environment it offered for producing world-class wines, he decided to make it his home. The winery he built in Haro in 1877 was one of the first three bodegas in Rioja, making the López de Heredia winery one of the oldest in the region. The wines have become a benchmark not just for Rioja enthusiasts but all lovers of fine wine. The bodega also houses a sizeable collection of historic winemaking and viticultural artefacts.
