World’s Best Vineyards 2019 results announced

Argentina’s Zuccardi Valle de Uco named number one South America dominates top 10

Monday 8th July, London – Argentina’s Zuccardi Valle de Uco has been named the World’s Best Vineyard by a prestigious voting academy from around the globe. A visit to this unique winery is a must. The visitor centre, which showcases the stunning views of the vineyards and mountains, is open Wednesdays to Sundays, while winery tours and tastings may be reserved throughout the day. The Piedra Infinita Cocina restaurant, meanwhile, offers a refined four-course seasonal menu as well as recommended wines of pairing.

The aim of the World’s Best Vineyards list is to raise the profile of wine tourism, and encourage visitors from all over the world to explore the world’s best wineries and vineyards.

The Mendoza based winner, founded in 1963, beat competition from around the world to be rated number one. The top ten saw a particularly strong showing from South America; two wineries from Argentina, two from Chile and one from Uruguay. In terms of success by country, Chile triumphed overall with eight listings amongst the top 50, beating Old World stalwart France with seven listings.

In total, 17 countries were represented, including classic wine producing countries as well as emerging wine producing countries such as the UK (Ridgeview – 36th), Lebanon (Chateau Heritage – 49th), and Canada (Mission Hill Winery – 50th).

While Zuccardi won the continent trophy South America, the other continent trophy winners are Rioja’s López de Heredia Vina Tondonia for Europe (3rd place), Rippon from New Zealand for the Australasia Continent Trophy (8th place), Robert Mondavi Winery for the North America Trophy (12th place), Vergelegen Wine Estate in Africa (34th place), and Lebanon’s Chateau Heritage for Middle East Asia (49th).

José Alberto Zuccardi, Managing Director of Zuccardi Valle de Uco, number one on the list, commented: “It’s a great surprise and a great pleasure for us to have the recognition as the World’s Best Vineyard 2019. As a family, we put a lot of passion in what we do; there are three generations of us all working together at the winery.

Our objective is to give consumers the full experience from the Uco Valley, through the wine, the ingredients in our restaurant which is sourced locally, and even the earth, as we use local concrete for the winery. It’s all about the terroir. Everything we do is an expression of Argentina, and specifically an expression of Uco Valley.

Such recognition makes me absolutely thrilled, and pushes us to continue our efforts. I can’t wait to celebrate at home!”

Voting process:

The list has been compiled from all of the nominations by the global academy of voters. There are 18 Chairs who have nominated up to 36 judges each, that have voted for the top seven vineyards that they have visited from anywhere in the world. There is no set criteria by which they make their judgement, it is about the “total experience”. Then the votes are counted and the sites ranked to establish which are the World’s Best Vineyards to visit.
