Wine Style

The winery produce wines at all levels from every day table wines to some of the world’s greatest reds, their top wines are bold and full bodied with ripe, vibrant fruit, yet they hark back to the Old World for their inspiration, structure and elegance.

Builders of Brunello
The Mariani family founded Banfi Vineyards in Montalcino in 1978. They were able to purchase a contiguous estate of 2,830 hectares, one-third of which is planted to vines whilst the balance is shared between olive groves, wheat fields, plum trees, truffle stands, forest and scrub. The mediaeval Poggio alle Mura Castle, part of Banfi Estate since 1983, has been lovingly restored and is a pioneering beacon for regional hospitality. Recently Banfi has purchased new Tuscan entities including vineyards in Bolgheri, Maremma, Chianti and Chianti Classico. Fiercely committed to sustainability there is high regard for three essential factors: each action must be socially fair, environmentally safe and economically feasible.

Your visit

Castello Banfi is a dreamy, multi-experience destination; there’s a hotel, two restaurants, an Enoteca, a Balsameria and a glass museum. All of this sits atop a hillside surrounded by resplendent Tuscan countryside and panoramic views. As well as sumptuous rooms, you can book a massage at Hotel il Borgo or try your hand at truffle hunting with a professional guide, discover the ideal habitat for truffles followed by a Tuscan lunch. There’s a 32km cycle trail through the Brunello vineyards (bikes or e-bikes provided) and don’t miss the glass museum which traces glass production through the ages and houses one of the largest private collections of glass dating back to ancient Roman times.

The wines

Banfi Brunello di Montalcino is a culmination of three decades of pioneering research into Sangiovese clones with the aim of producing outstanding Brunello. Meticulous grape selection is followed by vinification with skin contact for 10-12 days. Released in the fifth year after harvest, the wine is aged for a minimum of 4 years, including 2 years in oak barrels of various sizes, predominantly French oak barriques with some Slavonian oak casks. Banfi Brunello di Montalcino wines are full bodied and powerful, with ripe and gentle tannins making them velvety and harmonious.
Poggio alle Mura Brunello Riserva is also aged a minimum of five years before release, at least two of those years are in wood, 90% French oak barrique and the remaining 10% in large oak casks. Included in the five years of ageing is a minimum of one year of bottle maturation.
Brunello di Montalcino was Italy’s first wine region to be accorded DOCG status - a testament to its aristocracy, balance and fabulous proclivity for ageing.
