Born from the Land; Caretakers of the LandWine growing has been the pride of the Gramona family since 1850 and they have been making sparkling wines since the start of the 20th century. Gramona is located in the Alt Penedés region, 30 kms south of Barcelona. The climate is typically Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The vineyards are protected during harsher winters by the majestic, rocky Montserrat mountain to the north. The fifth and sixth generation acknowledge that the humility that comes with being caretakers of this land is their greatest asset. True to their beliefs and admiration for nature, all the vineyards are managed according to organic and biodynamic principles; ploughing is done with horses, pruning is done by hand and with respect and biodynamic preparations are applied to facilitate the health of the vines, compost is produced from their farm of cows, sheep, chickens and horses.
The winesWine is the only way to package time and Enoteca Gramona is the embodiment of this family’s work ethic and ethos. First launched in 1997 Jaume and Xavier Gramona took it upon themselves to age their top Cava for over 10 years, longer than anyone in their family since 1951. Through Enoteca they reaffirmed their suspicions: when you increase the time a sparkling spends resting in bottle, it becomes more expressive, while retaining commendable freshness, creating a deeper and more complex drinking experience.
Your visitJust 30km from Barcelona, this is a wonderful, tranquil place away from the city. Explore Gramona’s historical cellar; deep underground, be immersed in the unique and magical atmosphere in which their forefathers crafted the first bottles of wine and where Gramona’s best-kept secret, the century-old soleras are preserved. Marvel at the origins of their sparkling and the processes still used today to create complex, well-balanced, age-worthy wines. Back above ground, head out on horseback through the vineyards, visit the farm and dine in the winery where dishes of seasonal food from their biodynamic farm and vegetable garden are exquisitely paired with the sparkling wines on offer.
