Benegas

Mendoza, Argentina

Built in 1901, Bodega Benegas sits firmly at the centre of Argentina’s vinous history. Founded by politician and wine enthusiast Don Tiburcio, the estate was sensitively restored in 1999 and its 100-year-old stone cellars host tours and tastings that bring the region’s winemaking history to life. The winery uses concrete vessels to preserve the purity of its fruits, and is decorated with ponchos collected by another key member of the family and the current head winemaker, Federico Benegas Lynch, plus a museum of other fascinating artefacts. Book well in advance to experience the seven-metre long grill in the southern nave, which provides a roaring barbecue to accompany tastings at the even longer, regal table surrounded by stone columns.
