Viña Alicia Wines

Mendoza, Argentina

Established in 1998, it can be tricky locating this small yet masterly winery, but the warm welcome makes the journey well worth it. Viña Alicia is the passion project of Alicia Mateu Arizu, who brings more than 30 years’ worth of viticultural expertise to vineyards that have been in her family for generations. Husband Alberto is a respected winemaker and former president of Wines of Argentina, and their son Rodrigo now presides over this modestly-sized but big-thinking estate where decidedly quirky grape varieties for the country (think Nebbiolo, Mencía, Nero d’Avola, Riesling and Savagnin to name a few) are grown across two picturesque vineyards, some boasting vines up to 150 years old. The wines’ reputation is impeccable and you can try them at the end of an enlivening tour, in the sleek tasting room.
