Château Oumsiyat
Bekaa Valley, Lebanon
- #75 World's Best Vineyards 2024
Lebanon’s only Assyrtiko is made in the mountain village of Mtein, at the family-run Château Oumsiyat. Named ‘Cuvée Membliarus’ after the Phoenician governor of Santorini – the Greek island to which the grape is native – this white blend has sparked theories that Assyrtiko could have originated in Lebanon instead. It certainly flourishes in the warm and dry Mediterranean climate that makes visiting so pleasing. Judge for yourself with a tour of the winery, led by family members who’ll show you the old and new parts linking their current practices with a winemaking heritage that started in 1950. Stay for lunch to fuel up for hiking trails incorporating five ancient palaces.
