Here in the winemaking hub of Stellenbosch, contemporary South African design offsets the rocky shadows of Simonsberg mountain. Tokara’s sleek stone winery boasts full-length glass windows looking out onto the valley, and grounds filled with olive groves and the Cape’s indigenous fynbos vegetation plus a plethora of modern sculptures. You’d be forgiven for mistaking the children’s playground for one such work of art, making this a brilliant family destination, especially when combined with a trip to the delicatessen for light bites and artisanal produce. Within, move from the vast open fireplace of the Tasting Lounge to the main restaurant, opened in 2004 and renowned for its stylish take on local cuisine, five tapestries by internationally acclaimed artist William Kentridge adorning the walls.
