Persia meets Oregon: Founded in 1997 and nestled at the mouth of Oregon's Van Duzer Corridor, Momtazi Vineyard is a 532-acre estate where ancient Persian wisdom and holistic viticulture conjoin in harmony. Since Demeter USA certification in 2005, only biodynamic farming methods have been used, whilst Maysara winery received its biodynamic certification in 2007, when Moe and Flora Momtazi's eldest daughter, Tahmiene, became head winemaker.
Earth, wind and fire: Stemming from their Persian heritage, the Momtazi family has been inspired by the ancient Iranian Philosopher, Zoroaster, whose teachings date back over 7,000 years. When working their land, the family firmly believes in the interconnectedness of nature's four elements (earth, water, air and fire) and the spiritual bond shared between the universal; plant, animal and human spirit. These principles guide each decision, from how the soil is nurtured to how the wine is made.
Biodynamics in action: Roughly half of the estate remains uncultivated to preserve ecological balance across the property. Ninety five acres are dedicated to oak woodland, conservation, pastures, meadows and two vibrant reservoirs full of rainbow trout and bass, all of which attract birds of prey. There's a large group of wild turkey, forty cows (whose manure is used for estate-made compost), medicinal herbs (transformed into sprayable teas) and creeks that nourish the landscape. All are vital components of this living ecosystem that ensures the entire farm thrives.
Wines and charcuterie: While there are no vineyard tours at Maysara, visitors are welcome to choose between two different five-wine tasting flights that showcase the depth of Momtazi Vineyard, telling the story of the growing season in the glass. Charcuterie boards are available by pre-order (please give 48 hours' notice) and are a wonderful way to elevate this tasting experience.
Winery weddings: What better place than a winery for a wedding? Momtazi winery spans almost an acre, history and modernity come together in this impressive space. Arched oak doors lead into a room made of ancient volcanic stone. Persian rugs and stunning silk and wool tapestries create an old world feel of warmth and comfort. Corporate events can also be booked. Like the wines, this huge building which was sourced from materials on the estate, reflects a philosophy that values integrity, intention and respect for the land.
