Castles, cars and Carmelites: Sandwiched between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, Perelada is a flagship winery of Empordà, one of the oldest wine regions in Spain. The winery's story begins in 1923, when the Mateu family – specialists in the metal industry and founders of the automotive firm Hispano Suiza – purchased Perelada Castle. The ambition was to revive the wine-making traditions that dated back to the 14th century, when the Carmelite monks produced wine for the whole region, as documented in the parchment papers of the castle library.
Back to the future: Today, Perelada is much more than a winery – it is a cultural and tourism destination. The estate includes Castell Perelada and the Convent del Carme, which features a 14th-century Gothic church with cloisters, as well as an outstanding private art collection. Visitors can explore museums dedicated to wine, glass and ceramics; stay in their five-star hotel, enjoy a wine spa or play golf on their 18-hole course. Supreme culinary delights are to be had at their Michelin-starred restaurant, led by chef Paco Pérez, or with chef Javier Martínez, at his diner, which is recognised with two Repsol Suns.
Taste the tour:
A typical tasting tour at Perelada offers an immersive, experiential journey that reflects the family's legacy, their commitment to the Empordà region, and their values of architecture, sustainability and winemaking excellence. Be guided around the new Perelada winery, with its raised walkways to ensure full visibility of the winemaking process. Visit The Temple, a space dedicated to excellence and oenological creativity, where natural light from above creates a particularly magical and contemplative atmosphere, and finish with a guided tasting of three of Perelada's most iconic wines. Afterwards, relax at Celler 1923, the winery's bar and restaurant developed in collaboration with chef Paco Pérez. Here every visit is designed to be personal, emotional and immersive, capturing not just the essence of Perelada's wines, but the passion of a family deeply rooted in Spain's history.
Above and beyond: Perelada is also the setting for the Castell Perelada Festival, one of Europe's leading opera and dance events. The winey is conveniently located just a few kilometres from the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres and Cap de Creus Natural Park.
