Building blocks of excellence: Three years before the infamous Tasting of Paris (1976) Joe Phelps, a successful Colorado builder with a passion for wine established a branch office for his construction company in the San Francisco Bay area. Intrigued by Napa's potential, he began to explore Napa Valley. In 1973 he found a 600-acre former cattle ranch near St. Helena where, according to Phelps, there wasn't a grape in sight, just "lots of nice-looking cattle." He purchased it on the same day as Pink Floyd released their album, The Dark side of the Moon, and just a year later the winery was built and ready for the 1974 harvest.

A builder of buildings and of dreams: Phelps' vision was to make a unique blend each year that would be the finest wine he could craft from each vintage. Toda, Insignia is widely regarded as a qualitative benchmark for California winemaking. Phelps was also an early adopter of Syrah, which was little planted in California at the time. Today Home Ranch in St. Helena maintains 130 acres of vines, olive orchards, fruit trees and a hillside winery offering gracious hospitality and panoramic vineyard views.

Taste the difference: There are three tasting options available at Home Ranch:
The Founder's Tasting offers a personalised tasting featuring a selection of their current releases from Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast, including Insignia.

For those that would like to savour the region through food and wine, book 'A Taste of Place' – an unforgettable experience of pairing seasonal ingredients with the extraordinary wines of Joseph Phelps Vineyards. Meanwhile the Collector's Tasting not only includes the most recent releases but also the flagship wine, Insignia, and a selection of older wines from the library.

Make it memorable: For those hosting a casual weekend meal at home or even a one-off celebration, Joseph Phelps publish recipes on-line that will turn gatherings into lasting memories. Pan-fried steak with Insignia garlic butter, grilled pork chop with bacon and caramelised red onion purée, or for the sweeter tooth, check out the Cabernet Sauvignon Espresso dark chocolate truffles. Whether enjoyed in Napa or at home these wines exude a deep sense of place and excellence in every bottle.
