Wine Style

The wines are a true reflection the Ygay Estate and the result of the know-how acquired over 170 years of history and always with quality as the main premise.

The origin of Marqués de Murrieta winery is the origin of Rioja. Without the Murrieta family there would not have been Rioja as we know it today. Peruvian immigrant, Don Luciano Murrieta, brought the winemaking and viticultural techniques he learned in Bordeaux and made the first Bordeaux oak-influenced Rioja wine in 1852. His vision was clear from the beginning: to create a fine Rioja wine with a great ageing potential, just like Bordeaux, and he was keen to export his produce. He shipped his first vintage, the legendary 1852, to countries such as Mexico and Cuba, making it the first ever fine Rioja wine to be exported.

The wines

Capellania is made from Viura from a 6 hectare plot located at the highest altitude of the Ygay Estate. The high altitude, calcareous soils and low yield from 70 year old vines allied to French barrel ageing results in an incredible gastronomic wine with precision and grace.

The red wines of Murrieta wines are traditionally crafted using indigenous fruit and long ageing. Amongst their stand-out wines are Marqués de Murrieta, the glorious and very rare Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial (aged for at least 36 months in American oak) and a super-cuvée, Dalmau. The latter explores the inclusion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (10%), alongside Tempranillo and a splash of Graciano and is matured in French barriques as opposed to American oak barrels.
