Crystalline Rieslings from the Mosel Valley’s steep slate slopes
Ernie Loosen is one of the most recognisable faces in the world of wine. It’s no exaggeration to say that the popularity and prestige that Mosel Riesling enjoys around the world today is largely down to him. Thanks to his dedication, the Loosen estate has become a member of the prestigious VDP, Germany’s association of top-rated wine estates, and has been named among the best wine estates in Germany by practically every wine publication in existence.A river runs through it
Weingut Dr Loosen is situated in the heart of the Mosel Valley, whose historic and incredibly steep slate slopes following the meandering course of the ancient Mosel river make this one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world. The Dr Loosen estate has been in the same family for more than 200 years. When Ernie Loosen assumed ownership in 1988, he recognised that with ungrafted vines aged up to 140 years in some of Germany’s best-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create truly world-class wines. Tastings of these stunning Rieslings at the winery are by appointment only in order to ensure that you receive attentive personal treatment from Dr Loosen’s expert staff. On your bike
A recent development at Weingut Dr Loosen has been the building of a smart new guest house. Directly attached to the estate house just outside the village of Bernkastel, this is a great place from which to explore the beautiful surrounding area. The area is a mecca for hikers and cyclists, and many of the Mosel’s most prestigious vineyards like the Wehlener Sonnenur, Ürziger Würzgarten and Erdener Prälat can easily be reached by bike. The quaint village of Bernkastel is also worth a visit. Here, you can stroll the cobblestone streets and gaze upon antique half-timbered houses – and, of course, there are plenty of locations where you can enjoy a chilled glass of Riesling.
