The Midas touch
Millahue – meaning ‘golden place’ in Mapuche – in the Cachapoal Valley was virgin territory before Norwegian millionaire Alexander Vik and his wife, Carrie, planted vines there in 2004. Their goal? To create Chilean wines that would enter the pantheon of the world’s great wines. With an oenology team led by Patrick Valette, former owner of Château Pavie in St Emilion, it’s a goal they appear to be achieving with some aplomb.
The whole shebang
Set across 4,450 sprawling hectares of vineyards and explorable nature, VIK welcomes guests for vineyard tours, wine tastings, cooking classes, hiking, biking, picnics, yoga, wine spas – the whole wine-experience shebang.
And horseback riding. From your horse-top perch at the top of the vineyard slope, enjoy peerless views of the surrounding vines, the broad, sweeping valley floor below and the Cordillera de la Costa mountain range rising steeply to the west – all giving a sense of exquisite openness in this vast yet relatively unpeopled New World wine land.
Flavours of Chile
VIK’s exceptional wine and culinary experience is marked by first-rate wines and superbly executed food, with executive chef Rodrigo Acuña Bravo producing dishes that celebrate the bold flavours of Chile. Much of the produce – all organic – is grown on-site. VIK is also home to two singular spa retreats – Vik Chile and Puro Vik, each a stunning resort in its own right, designed to make your stay in Cachapoal extra-special. Vik Chile comprises 22 individually designed suites, while Puro Vik is a collection of glasshouses tucked into the hills close by. Expect high-end amenities such as a marble infinity-pool, gym, sauna and wine spa for the ultimate sense of pampered relaxation. Together with the exceptional Smiljan Radic-designed VIK winery, these luxury retreats promise guests and unmatched escape.
