A new Uruguayan icon
One of the most innovative South American wineries to emerge in the past decade, Bodega Garzón continues to blaze a trail in terms of both the quality of its wines and the wine tourist experience it offers. Located in Maldonado, just north of the stylish coastal resort city of Punta del Este, the sustainably designed $85 million project now features a luxury hotel complex and South America’s newest members’ club, together with its world-class wine range overseen by former Antinori winemaker Alberto Antonini, and a restaurant directed by legendary firepit chef Francis Mallmann.
A way with flames
The 120-seat Restaurant at Bodega Garzón was conceived by Patagonian superstar chef Francis Mallmann, specialist in barbecue and firepit cooking. Dining here is a must – though booking at least 24 hours in advance is recommended. For a more hands-on experience, cooking classes, in which you will learn all about Mallmann’s way with flames, are also on offer, followed by a four-course wine pairing lunch.
Although Bodega Garzón focuses primarily on the red Tannat, Uruguay’s flagship grape, it works with many other, often surprising varieties. Garzón is one of the few producers in Uruguay to work with the Galician white Albariño, for example. Learn all about the varieties Garzón grows and the Atlantic-influenced Maldonado terroir with a guided winery and vineyard tour. There are also a host of outdoor activities to take advantage of the winery’s unparalleled surroundings, including hiking, equestrianism, picnics among the vineyards, even hot-air balloon rides.
Join the club
A recent development at Bodega Garzón has been the launch of the Garzón Club, offering members access to a range of exclusive experiences. These include the chance to join Garzón Tajamares, the PGA Tour-preferred golf club designed by Masters and US Open champion Angel Cabrera; winemaking seminars hosted by Garzón’s consultant winemaker Alberto Antonini; private dining at The Restaurant; and privileged access to the Bulgheroni Family Portfolio wineries around the globe.
